The health & extent of the city’s TREE CANOPY serves as a proxy in Seattle’s existential fight about development; people who want less development point to data showing a receding tree canopy as evidence that increased development is killing Seattle. And people who dig increased development point to data showing expanding tree canopy as evidence that more development is groovy.
The data is, in fact, inconclusive, showing both a decrease and an increase in canopy.
